This shift in tone is jarring and abrupt, but it’s performed with so much gusto by the four cast members that it just about gets away with it. Skinner seems to take real pleasure in playing with audience expectations and the play ends with a somewhat surreal song and dance number. As with the other productions in the Roundabout Season, the purpose-built amphitheatre brings the audience right into the heart of the action, with the actors using the whole space, including the staircases and aisles of the auditorium to inventive effect. ![]() Lucy Osborne’s atmospheric design uses low light and dry ice to transform the tiny stage into a nightclub, complete with mirror ball. O’Flynn has less to do, but she makes for a memorable Foxie, revelling in her show-stopper of an entrance in pillar-box red wig and kimono. The power of that twist to shock and surprise is as much down to Cope’s subtle performance as it is to the writing. Cope in particular is impressive as Graham, keeping the audience guessing about his character’s motivations right up to the reveal of the play’s big twist. Sheridan is teamed again with Maia Alexander, his on stage partner in One Day When We Were Young, who here displays her versatility as the dowdy, poodle-permed and blue cagoule-clad Maggie, a world away from the glamorous character she played in Nick Payne’s opener.Īlistair Cope and Kate O’Flynn (who starred together in Duncan Macmillian’s Lungs) complete the quartet.
